Tips On What To Do While Waiting For A Tech Job!

Friday, 15th November 2024, we had a masterclass in the TB Techies community, and it revolved around what one can do while waiting for a tech job. It is the dream of every techie to get a job when they have acquired a tech skill but in most cases, tech jobs don't come immediately. In that waiting period, some end up frustrated, confused, and desperate. In the process, some battle rejections and they end up quitting their tech career.

Truly, searching and applying for tech jobs daily is said to be a full-time job, but you can also keep yourself busy while at it to sustain yourself and keep your hopes alive.

What can you do during the waiting period for a tech job?

This article will highlight priceless tips from the TB Techies masterclass during the AMA session provided by our resident tech advisor Mrs Precious Ikade.

Let's proceed!

What Techies Should Do While Waiting For A Tech Job.

During the masterclass, Mrs. Precious Ikade highlighted 3 tips on what to do while waiting for a tech job, read them below:

Get A Temporary Job

Before you get your dream tech job , you need to sustain yourself, and you need money to do so, no matter how short the period is, unless you have someone catering to your needs. Instead of staying idle, get a temporary job that can fetch you money while Job hunting.

You can get a job outside tech to support yourself as you keep applying for a tech role. You can also volunteer or intern in a tech firm before you get your dream Tech job to build your portfolio even if the pay is little. Stay Physically/Mentally Fit

Working part-time and job hunting for a tech role can be challenging mentally and physically. It becomes mentally challenging when you face constant rejection from your job search.

Job search is a straining process as you will be studying and trying out new strategies. You might visit various job sites just to land a tech role, and then combining this with your other job is one big task.

During this period, keep your health in check.

You can practice these 3 tips highlighted by our resident tech advisor during the session:

  • Set Daily Goals: Create a schedule to balance learning, job applications, and relaxation.
  • Maintain a positive mindset and let go of past rejections.
  • Exercise and Eat Well: Even short daily exercises can reduce stress and keep you motivated.
  • Find Support: Talk to others in similar situations, either in person or online, to share experiences and stay motivated. (You have Tekbuddy, so you are in good hands)

Remember, you can only get a tech job and sustain it when you are healthy and alive.

Leverage Referrals

One way to get referrals is by volunteering to carry out tasks for others in the tech industry. Practice your skills during the waiting period and use those opportunities to build a reputation that will win you referrals.

It's easier to land your dream tech job when you leverage referrals. Most times, it gives you a one-way ticket to your dream job without any further interviews. Also, network strategically with tech leaders to get volunteering opportunities that will yield referrals.

One key point, as highlighted by the speaker of the masterclass, was “record your referrals in a document for further use in your job search”.
